Adult Groups

We welcome group visits! To ensure you have enough space to explore the galleries, advance booking is essential for all groups over the size of 10. To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking as far ahead as you can. Visiting the museum is free, but our suggested donation for all visitors is £5.

We can provide a volunteer Welcome Host, who will greet your group and provide a 15-minute introduction to the museum, including a brief history of The MERL and a summary of our recent redevelopment with a short guide to the new galleries and highlights.

Welcome Hosts are happy to remain in the galleries to answer questions during your visit. The Welcome Host is free of charge and subject to availability.

The MERL café offers hot and cold drinks, snacks, and a small selection of sandwiches.

We can also offer refreshments and lunch options for larger groups if booked in advance and subject to room availability.

A room can be reserved for your group during your visit, subject to availability. This provides the space to securely leave coats and bags while you tour the galleries, but can also be used as a meeting or discussion space. Eating and drinking is permitted in this space.

If you require larger spaces for your group, you may choose to hire a meeting room.

If your group is interested in an evening visit, the museum is open until 9pm on the last Thursday of each month. We also schedule ‘Extended Hours Weeks’ when the museum, shop and café are open until 9pm, every evening of the week. This special week of extended hours is the perfect opportunity for your group to enjoy a visit to The MERL on your usual meeting night.

We can reserve space for a small minibus and up to two cars in our car park. Parking for coaches can be arranged on the University campus, but must be booked in advance.
